Manistique, MI (October 10, 2024): In a first-of-its-kind initiative for Schoolcraft County, 24 elected and appointed officials from county, city, and township governments recently completed the "I Do Solemnly Swear" governance training program offered by Schoolcraft Tourism & Commerce (STC) in partnership with Michigan State University Extension (MSUE).

"While there are no legal mandates for governance training, both the City of Manistique and Schoolcraft County governments recognize the importance of equipping officials with the knowledge and skills necessary to be effective leaders," stated Jim Blanchard, Governance Training Committee member.
The four-part program, held throughout 2024, covered a wide range of topics essential for good governance, including:
Legal and Ethical Compliance
Effective Decision-Making
Accountability and Transparency
Strategic Planning Financial Oversight
Conflict Resolution
Community Engagement
Risk Management
Continual Improvement
Strengthening Public Trust
By participating in this comprehensive training, officials gained valuable insights and practical skills to better serve the public. This translates to a more informed and effective governing body, ultimately leading to increased public trust and confidence in local government.

Brad Newman, Senior Extension Educator for MSUE, stated, “Training and continuing education is critical in any profession. For local government officials it is no different – staying current with best practices, knowing fundamental roles and responsibilities, and practicing ethical behavior is critical to extraordinary governance. By participating in this training series, these local officials are demonstrating their commitment to continuing education and their commitment to the community in leading toward a brighter future.”
“Being able to attend the governance training has provided me a chance to review and learn about my role responsibility as city council member” said Kimberly Shiner, Mayor
Manistique. “Sharing this time with the group has allowed us an opportunity to share our stories and experience along with learning from one another. Many thanks to those who make this possible.”
Furthermore, Paul Walker, Board Chairperson Schoolcraft County Board of Commissioners said, “By continually investing in governance training, county officials demonstrate their commitment to upholding the highest standards of transparency, legality, and ethics in government.”

STC Leads the Way in Providing Governance Education
The "I Do Solemnly Swear" training is part of a larger initiative launched by STC in 2023 to offer governance training opportunities for local non-profit organizations. Recognizing the value of informed leadership across all sectors, STC plans to launch the next phase of training for Schoolcraft County residents interested in serving on boards and committees.
Victoria George, Executive Director of Schoolcraft Tourism & Commerce and EDC, expressed her gratitude for the successful program. "I was so impressed by the participation from various departments across the city, townships, and county governments. This collaborative approach signifies a strong commitment to good governance in Schoolcraft County. I look forward to future training the Governance Committee plans to bring to our community, like a Community Academy."
